Phi Alpha Theta (International Honor Society in History)
Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society that seeks to “promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.” They seek to “bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by members in a variety of ways.” Established on March 17, 1921 at the University of Arkansas, Phi Alpha Theta has grown to include more than 700 chapters in 50 states. Sigma Rho is the accredited local chapter at Texas A&M University.
At the national level Phi Alpha Theta offers a variety of benefits for its members. At the biennial convention, undergraduate and graduate members are encouraged to participate, exchange ideas and present papers. In addition to publishing The Historian, a respected historical quarterly in which all members are invited to submit articles, Phi Alpha Theta also produces The News Letter, which conveys current information on Phi Alpha Theta and its activities.
Phi Alpha Theta underwrites six annual paper prize awards. Undergraduates are eligible for the Lynn W. Turner Award, as well as four Founders’s Awards. There are also numerous graduate scholarships and awards. The History Department has a History Club that meets usually once a month. The intent of the club is to foster discussion and interest in historical topics, as well provide an informal atmosphere for socialization for history majors and those interested in history. Membership is open to all.

Undergraduate Research Paper Competition
Each year the department sponsors a research paper competition to recognize the best paper written for a history course in the previous calendar year (papers submitted for the Undergraduate Research Fellow Program are not eligible for this award). The winner will receive a modest cash prize and a certificate. Students need not be history majors or currently enrolled to be considered for the prize.

To be considered for the prize, please send an electronic version of your paper, and an indication of the course and term for which it was written, to Dr. Hinojosa. The annual deadline for submissions is March 1st.
Undergraduate Scholarly Activities Grant
Each semester, the Department of History offers the Undergraduate Scholarly Activities Grant. These competitive grants, ranging from $250-$500, are designed to support undergraduate students who are pursuing scholarly activities related to the field of historical research, including but not limited to conducting off-campus primary source research for a history class or history thesis and presenting original historical research at a scholarly conference. Students who are awarded an USA Grant are required to submit a one-page report on their use of the grant money within one-month of expending the funds. The Department of History Undergraduate Committee accepts and reviews applications (click here) on an ongoing basis. Department of History Study Abroad Grant
Each semester, the Department of History will offer a limited number of Study Abroad Grants ($750 for trips lasting up to 5-weeks; $1,000 for 10-week trips; $1,250 for semester or longer experiences). These competitive grants are designed to support undergraduate history majors and minors undertaking study abroad experiences and other students who enroll in study abroad programs led by history department faculty members. Upon their return, students who receive a Department of History Study Abroad Grant are required to submit a one-page report detailing their use of the grant money and also to give a short presentation on their experience to other history majors interested in study abroad. Students interested in a Study Abroad Grant should submit: 1) a completed application (click here), and; 2) a letter of recommendation from a history faculty member supporting their application.
